The Jewish community lived, in the Free State, since the early days, where they enjoyed full civic and political equality. They are to be found in all the five regions in this volume. What started as purely rural living changed over the years to mining for gold in the Free State Goldfields. The formation of beautiful National parks in Mountain Route attract visitors. The dams built on the Gariep (Orange) River irrigate vast maize fields which are part of the maize triangle. Life in Riemland is commemorated in the Riemland Museum housed in the old Heilbron Synagogue.
